Gryphin

The kanban board that out-prices Trello and out-ships Jira

A real-time collaborative kanban platform built for teams that find Jira bloated and Linear rigid. Live cursors, presence, in-board chat, AI assistance, and time tracking — at $0.80 to $1.20 per user, priced 80% below Trello.

The Challenge

Understanding the problem

The team came in with a precise wedge: every kanban tool on the market was either bloated (Jira), rigid (Linear), or overpriced (Trello at ~$10/user). They wanted a kanban board that felt instant, was genuinely collaborative in real time — live cursors, presence, in-board chat, not just shared state — and could undercut the entire market on price. Pulling that off meant building infrastructure normally reserved for Figma-tier products on a price point closer to a Notion plan.

Before
Our Solution

How we solved it

We built Gryphin as a Next.js 15 + Supabase + Redis stack with a custom real-time presence layer over Supabase Realtime. Live cursors, presence indicators, and inline chat run on a shared websocket session per board. AI workflows (drafting cards, summarising progress, suggesting next steps) run through a streaming layer that doesn't block the UI. The whole thing ships across web, mobile, and an MCP server that connects AI assistants directly to user boards.

After
Our Approach

Step by step

How we approached this project to deliver exceptional results.

1

Designed a brand and pricing position around the wedge — "80% less than Trello" — and made it the loudest message on the homepage and pricing page

2

Modelled boards, columns, cards, members, and presence in PostgreSQL via Supabase, with row-level security for board-level access control

3

Built a real-time layer on Supabase Realtime + Redis for live cursors, presence, and in-board chat without per-user costs blowing up the price model

4

Architected the front-end with Next.js 15 + shadcn/ui + Framer Motion + GSAP for the marketing site; the app uses Three.js for 3D card transitions and motion polish

5

Shipped a separate MCP server so AI assistants can read and write to boards directly — turning Gryphin into an AI-native kanban, not a kanban with a chatbot bolted on

6

Deployed under Cloudflare + Docker Compose with Sentry for runtime observability and Playwright + Vitest covering both unit and end-to-end paths
